By far, the funniest...and yes, the creepiest, thing I've seen a while. Put this in the "what the f*&# were they thinking" category. Then again, my motto has always been put a picture of a monkey on it, and somebody'll buy it.

I know what what you mean. He was actually asked about this:

"I, and I’m assuming others, want to keep the books. I think that often times people steal to complete their personal collection. Lastly, I could not steal from the library; it would be wrong to steal from such a good institution. I look at them like a friend of the community, and you don’t steal from your friends."

What a guy.

So many of us know exactly what it means, but it still does our little bibliophilic hearts good to hear someone else--especially someone so young--say it.

What a terrible tragedy. If only there were some sort of institution that stored books and allowed the public to come in and read them, perhaps even borrow them, this person's problems could be solved. But alas, such institutions--which would perhaps be called "libraries"--do not exist, forcing poor readers to steal books.

Hello! thank you so much for mentioning me! That made me happy (I've linked you back).
Oh, and when I read: "and my wife liked the idea of clearing some of the many books from the house (insert bookseller laughter here) " in your more-about-you, that made me laugh indeed. So I made this strip thinking of it: http://h5l5n5-theaccidentalbookseller.blogspot.com/2008/05/bookselling-side-effect.html
Thanks again and take care!

Working in a library I'm always interested in the future of books and print material in general. Ten years ago I attended a talk at which the speaker confidently said that in ten years there wouldn't be a need for physical libraries anymore. While e-journals have really caught on, though, e-books are lagging and print-on-demand services are growing. I think the "thinginess" referred to in the Tribune article still appeals to people.
